Luv2Answer asked: I have heard on the news numerous times and watched interviews with people who “can’t get coverage.” Turns out that a lot of these people are eligible for and have access to very inexpensive catastrophic insurance with a high deductible. It would cover ER, cancer, heart attacks, major illnesses, surgeries etc. but it won’t cover a trip to a doctor for a cold or something like that.
I’m sorry but to me that IS insurance coverage. I’m so tired of people wanting everything for free. My tax dollars shouldn’t go toward paying for health care for someone who doesn’t want to pay their own way and will abuse the system.
David – If insurance pays “only” 80% of someones bills that might go into the millions then you honestly believe that “it’s not worth having insurance.”? Are you serious? Where else can you receive a million dollars worth of services for $20,000?

jasonthejedi asked: I’m quitting my job on October 24th (with a large employer) and am starting a job on the 27th. I won’t have insurance with the new job until November 1. This means my insurance will end at midnight on the 24th with Company A and begin at midnight on the 1st with Company B. That’s one whole week for those who can’t do math. However, I’m an extremely low risk person. Is it possible to get COBRA retroactively if something were to happen that one week? I ask because I don’t want to pay COBRA for one month, but I’d be more than willing to pay the price if something catastrophic (God forbid) were to happen that week.
I’m pretty sure termination of employment is covered by COBRA. I gave my two weeks. I’m not getting fired on the 24th.
Thanks for all the input so far! And yes about the midnight thing. I checked with HR and they told me it would end at midnight on my last day of employment. It’s pretty sad that they would do that even though I am leaving on good terms and have been with them for 6 years. However, it just adds one more reason as to why I don’t want to work for them anymore.

Freedom4 asked: (1) Insurance by definition is the transfer of risk from one party to another for a premium.
(2) If people did not have to get insurance until something catastrophic happened then nobody would and insurance would not be a transfer of risk. it would be the most expensive medical payment system in the world. No healthy people would have it.
(3) They do make a profit, but profit drives efficiency. Without it there is no driver for efficiencies and that is why if you take two identical businesses, one is run by the govt and one is run in the private sector, it costs the private sector 1/3 as much to run it. That si where the profit comes in and why the government should leave more up to the private sector.
(4) You liberals claim that people are just getting kicked off insurance as soon as they get sick, but that is very rare. If insurance companies got a reputation for doing so, then the free market would kick in and nobody would use that insurance company. I know my work would drop a company at the drop of a hat if they found out someone was refused payment for something that should have been covered, or was dropped.

mums_the_word asked: I just came home from being at school and found out that since I’m no longer a student, I won’t be on my father’s insurance plan. However, without that, I don’t have any insurance and have no way of going to the doctor. I’m 9 1/2 weeks and I haven’t been yet because of this whole health insurance issue and I know I need to go, but I just don’t know how.
Any advice? Any cheap insurance agencies? I live in Massachusetts if that helps, Boston area.
