Why is catastrophic health insurance not enough for people?

catastrophic insurance
Luv2Answer asked:

I have heard on the news numerous times and watched interviews with people who “can’t get coverage.” Turns out that a lot of these people are eligible for and have access to very inexpensive catastrophic insurance with a high deductible. It would cover ER, cancer, heart attacks, major illnesses, surgeries etc. but it won’t cover a trip to a doctor for a cold or something like that.

I’m sorry but to me that IS insurance coverage. I’m so tired of people wanting everything for free. My tax dollars shouldn’t go toward paying for health care for someone who doesn’t want to pay their own way and will abuse the system.
David – If insurance pays “only” 80% of someones bills that might go into the millions then you honestly believe that “it’s not worth having insurance.”? Are you serious? Where else can you receive a million dollars worth of services for $20,000?

Why does the left think that Insurance Companies are a socialist government program?

Freedom4 asked:

(1) Insurance by definition is the transfer of risk from one party to another for a premium.

(2) If people did not have to get insurance until something catastrophic happened then nobody would and insurance would not be a transfer of risk. it would be the most expensive medical payment system in the world. No healthy people would have it.

(3) They do make a profit, but profit drives efficiency. Without it there is no driver for efficiencies and that is why if you take two identical businesses, one is run by the govt and one is run in the private sector, it costs the private sector 1/3 as much to run it. That si where the profit comes in and why the government should leave more up to the private sector.

(4) You liberals claim that people are just getting kicked off insurance as soon as they get sick, but that is very rare. If insurance companies got a reputation for doing so, then the free market would kick in and nobody would use that insurance company. I know my work would drop a company at the drop of a hat if they found out someone was refused payment for something that should have been covered, or was dropped.

We could cut out the middleman. Pay your doctor of choice for the service he provides, pay him cash for the services provided, or if there is a catastrophic illness or injury, you could get a government backed loan to pay off the doctor/hospital over time. We would drastically reduce all the administrative expenses for the doctor, create competition among doctors, and save jillions of dollars a year on insurance. In the long run if your family is paying $12,000 a year for insurance you would have to come out ahead.

How do health insurance premiums go down if private insurance is forced to cover preexisting illnesses?

99% of the claims made in favor of the house health care bill are outright lies. It is amazing that people believe these things. Explain to me how if private insurance companies are forced to cover people with preexisting illnesses and not allowed to discriminate on a variety of factors, costs go down.

Is President Obama’s health care change going to eliminate lifetime caps on health insurance coverage?

almond9090 asked:

In today’s Grand Junction, CO press conference, President Obama claimed that under the new health care changes proposed, all insurance companies will be prohibited from imposing lifetime caps on coverage. Is this really part of the plan? He correctly points out that in catastrophic health situations, many (perhaps all?) health insurance plans will max out at some lifetime limit ($1 or $2 million is typical, but even these high limits could be reached in chronic cancer or organ transplant cases, etc.)

I would like to see more specific details like this, which can be debated in terms of cost versus benefit. This is a possible way that he and the majority party might gain support from skeptics like me.

Warren T asked:

1. Tort reform to reduce the costs associated with medical malpractice lawsuits
2. Either do complete away with group insurance or make it so everyone has access to group insurance
3. Require everyone to carry health insurance or face fines.
4. Require insurance companies to make available health insurance to everyone
5. Health insurance will only cover catastrophic costs and not the normal costs of health care.
