Why is catastrophic health insurance not enough for people?

catastrophic insurance
Luv2Answer asked:

I have heard on the news numerous times and watched interviews with people who “can’t get coverage.” Turns out that a lot of these people are eligible for and have access to very inexpensive catastrophic insurance with a high deductible. It would cover ER, cancer, heart attacks, major illnesses, surgeries etc. but it won’t cover a trip to a doctor for a cold or something like that.

I’m sorry but to me that IS insurance coverage. I’m so tired of people wanting everything for free. My tax dollars shouldn’t go toward paying for health care for someone who doesn’t want to pay their own way and will abuse the system.
David – If insurance pays “only” 80% of someones bills that might go into the millions then you honestly believe that “it’s not worth having insurance.”? Are you serious? Where else can you receive a million dollars worth of services for $20,000?

I have catastrophic insurance — works great.

    Blue Shield Active Start 35

I have no deductibles for most basic services. The hospital visits are 60/40 but only up to $7500…something I can manage should I have to pay out of pocket.

The reason they call it catastrophic is because it limits your liability to $7500 should you be faced w/ a catastrophe.

I’d rather pay the $7500 than to be strapped w/ $20,000 or more as the poster below is trying condone.

High deductible insurance normally only covers 80% or less and can require the person to pay out of pocket $500 or more before it pays a dime. With cancer treatment running in to the hundreds of thousands of dollars they would be looking at medical bills of $20,000 or more. Might as well not have any coverage.

If you have insurance coverage you are sharing expenses with everyone else in your insurance group. If you don’t use what you and your employer pay in to the system you are already subsidizing someone that uses more.

No one in this country should die of a treatable condition simply because they are poor for what ever reason.

“Where else can you receive a million dollars worth of services for $20,000?” Well, from any decent insurance company you would get them for no more than $2,000 – $5,000. Also, since we are talking 80%, if your procedure cost 1 million you would be on the hook for $200,000. For some of those you would be looking at $250,000 – $300,000.

If you can’t afford your part, you don’t get the care. As such, it does not matter if it is $20,000 or 1,000,000 you don’t get it.

Catastrophic insurance is a rip off foisted on those that can least afford it under the guise of “look you can have affordable insurance”. However if they are that poor that they need to go that route they could never afford the co-pays.

Now, lets look at a real world example: my son is a type one diabetic and is going to school. Since he had a gap between high school and college I can not add him to my health insurance. It cost about $600 a month for his supplies he needs to live. Luckily the state of Washington provides coverage for him. Based on your approach, he should either drop out of school and stay at the burger joint or die. In a year he will graduate with a 4 year degree and will be able to obtain decent health insurance. Sure sounds like a better choice to me.

Exactly. People seem to want everything handed to them.
